Home Battery vs Generator: Which Is Right for Hurricane Season in Vero Beach?

October 5, 2026

Every hurricane season, homeowners in Indian River and St. Lucie counties ask us the same question: should I get a home battery or a generator? Both keep your lights on when the grid goes down. They just do it in different ways. Here’s how to think about it.

How a home battery works

A home battery stores electricity and releases it when the power goes out. It can charge from the grid, from solar panels, or from both. When an outage hits, it takes over on its own and runs quietly, with no fuel to store and no engine to start.

We install batteries three ways:

  • Standalone, with no solar needed
  • As part of a new solar system
  • Added to solar you already have

If you have solar, a battery lets you use the power your panels make during the day, even when the grid is down.

How a standby generator works

A standby generator is installed permanently at your home and starts on its own when the power goes out. It runs on natural gas or propane, so it can keep going through a long outage while the utility works to restore power.

We install Generac generators. We handle the permits and coordinate the natural gas or propane installation as part of your quote.

Where a battery makes sense

  • You already have solar, or you’re planning it
  • You want backup that’s quiet and needs no fuel
  • You want to keep air conditioning and your other key circuits running, with a battery sized to your home

Where a generator makes sense

  • You want to ride out a long outage
  • You want to run more of the house
  • You already have natural gas, or you’re open to propane

Can you have both?

Yes. Some homes are better off with both: a battery for quiet, everyday backup paired with solar, and a generator for long outages. It depends on your home, your panel, and what you need to keep running.

What decides it is your panel and your loads

What a battery or generator can actually carry depends on its size, your electrical panel, and what you need to run. That’s why we look at your home in person before recommending either one. Online calculators can’t see your panel.
